Negley & Solway Green Streets

Project Description

Overview

The Wightman Park Green Infrastructure Project combines neighborhood-scale stormwater capture and conveyance in the street Right of Way with park-based stormwater detention infrastructure. Ethos Collaborative and collaborator Studio for Spatial Practice are finalizing designs for a networked “green street” system to collect rainwater from the neighborhood, infiltrate runoff locally, and convey excess to the park. Project goals focused on reducing stormwater runoff contributing to combined sewer overflows in the M-29 “priority” sewershed. Stormwater management elements compliment and incorporate community and stakeholder-guided improvements envisioned as part of the Wightman Park Conceptual Master Plan.

This project re-imagines the local streetscape to add value to the community through decreasing stormwater runoff, increasing pedestrian safety and neighborhood flood preparedness, and creating more functional green space in the urban environment via a watershed-based approach.

Flooding on Negley Street

Street Flooding Problems

During moderate to heavy rain events, the conditions on Negley Street become unpleasant for pedestrians and potentially unsafe for drivers.

Green infrastructure rendering

Green Infrastructure Solution

The green infrastructure will capture and store runoff to reduce the negative impacts of rain events. The vegetation also contributes to a livelier streetscape.

Connections to the Park

The green infrastructure elements on Solway and Negley Streets integrate into the master plan for Wightman Park. Excess stormwater overflows to the park system.
